Top 10 Most Popular Breeds in the 50 Largest U.S. Cities — 2007 AKC Registration Figures
ATLANTA’S TOP DOGS
1. Labrador Retriever
2. Golden Retriever
3. German Shepherd
4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
5. Boxer
6. Yorkshire Terrier
7. Shih Tzu
8. Miniature Schnauzer
9. Doberman Pinscher
10. Dachshund

Local Statistical Snapshot
* Despite having one of the world’s most beloved and renowned Bulldogs as the mascot for its state university sports team—University of Georgia’s “Uga,”—Atlanta is one of the few cities in the nation that did not include the Bulldog in its Top 10.
* The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel moved from 7th to 4th on the local 2007 list, matching the breed’s national growth in popularity—since 1997, this breed has seen a 406% increase in popularity across the country.
* The Doberman Pinscher debuted on the local list at 9th place, while the Shih Tzu went from 10th to 7th on the local list, and the Yorkshire Terrier moved its way from 9th to 6th place locally.
* Atlantans can see and learn more about all of their favorite breeds on Saturday, February 2 when the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship — where country’s top dogs compete for $225,000 in prize money and the title of “National Champion” — airs on Animal Planet from 8-11pm.
* A local Best of Breed winner—English Setter “Ch Chebaco Blames It On Trabeiz,” will compete for $50,000 and the title of National Champion. A rare breed, English Setters rank 83rd on the Atlanta list and 93rd nationally.

“With the Georgia Bulldogs having such a rich and storied history, it’s surprising that the Bulldog isn’t one of the Top 10 breeds in Atlanta,” says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “However, the inclusion of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as well as the debut of the Doberman Pinscher on Atlanta’s Top 10 list proves that Atlantans don’t necessarily stand on tradition.”

Local Statistical Snapshot
* While the Bulldog reached the 10th most popular spot on the national registration statistics, it remains 13th on Austin’s top 10 list, the same spot as last year.
* Two small breeds that didn’t make the cut on the local top 10 list are the Shih Tzu, which went from 10th last year to the 11th spot this year, and the Miniature Schnauzer, which plummeted to 12th place from 5th on the 2006 list.
* Comparatively, larger breeds including the German Shepherd rose from 8th to 4th place on this year’s Austin list, while the Boxer went from 7th last year to 5th this year.
* Austin residents can see and learn more about all of their favorite breeds on Saturday, February 2 when the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship — where country’s top dogs compete for $225,000 in prize money and the title of “National Champion” —airs on Animal Planet from 8-11 p.m.
“Last year’s top ten list reflected a trend towards smaller breeds in Austin,” said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “However this year, it looks like the pendulum has swung back towards larger breeds, as they incorporate 4 out of the top 5 spots. Perhaps Austiner’s like their breeds like they like their barbecue—big!”

* A local Best of Breed entry from the Baltimore area—Border Collie “Ch Briarpatch Top That PT Na Naj”, or “Christopher”—will compete for $50,000 and the Best In Show title.
“Baltimore is considered a working-class port town whose roots run deep,” says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “So it’s no surprise that the Rottweiler—a member of the Working Group—would continue to move up Baltimore’s top 10 list.”

* The Boston Terrier ranks 18th on this year’s local list, down from the 11th spot in 2006.
* Bostonians can see and learn more about all of their favorite breeds on Saturday, February 2 when the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship — where top dogs compete for $225,000 in prize money and the title of “National Champion” — airs on Animal Planet from 8-11 p.m.

“Boston’s list mirrored the national top ten with the exception of the Pomeranian and Pug,” said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “These two toy breeds make great pets for cosmopolitan dog owners who want canine companionship in a small package.”

“Buffalo is one of the only cities –along with Des Moines and Milwaukee – to not include the nationally popular Yorkshire Terrier in its top ten,“says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “Considering that the average temperature hovers around 20 degrees in the winter, perhaps Buffalonians prefer larger canines that make great cuddling companions.”

Despite these differences, Windy City dog owners still prefer the national favorites above all. The Lab, Yorkie and German Shepherd took the top three spots.”

* The Yorkshire Terrier’s low standing in Denver (8th) bucks the national trend – it has been in the nationwide Top 10 since 1995, last year hitting 2nd place for the first time.
* The German Shorthaired Pointer is an unusual breed to see in any Top 10 – yet it maintained its 7th place ranking in Denver for the past two years (it ranks 18th nationally).
* Some of the rarest breeds within the city limits include the Finnish Spitz, Komondor and the Pharaoh Hound.
* Denver residents can see and learn more about their favorite breeds on Saturday, February 2 when the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship — where the world’s top dogs compete for $225,000 in prize money and the title of “National Champion” — airs on Animal Planet from 8-11 p.m.
“The Mile High City has elevated the Bulldog to 4th place,” says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “But despite its love of this iconic breed, overall, Denver residents seem to prefer large, sporty dogs such as the Labrador Retriever, the German Shepherd and German Shorthaired Pointer. “Kansas City is known as the All-American City and its local favorites reflect that with eight of the city’s top 10 choices mirroring the national list,” says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “Residents in the Heartland love a variety of breeds, but have really embraced the Bulldog, elevating it to 5th place.”

Local Statistical Snapshot
* The Boxer dominated the 2007 Top 10 list by moving into 1st place and ousting the nationally favored Labrador Retriever. Knoxville is one of only five U.S. cities not to place the Lab in its top spot (Detroit and Miami favor the German Shepherd, Honolulu the Lab and Orlando the Yorkie).
* Knoxville residents are right in line with the national preferences when it comes to the Bulldog, which placed 10th in 2007.
* Despite falling off the national Top 10 list in 2007, the Miniature Schnauzer made great gains locally rising from 8th in 2006 to 5th in 2007. The Golden Retriever also made a huge leap in Knoxville, 5 spots to 4th place, in line with its national ranking.
* The Beagle dropped out of favor in Knoxville dropping three slots to 13th place in 2007.
* Some of the least common breeds in Knoxville include the American Eskimo Dog, Bearded Collie and Whippet.

“While preserving historical traditions is commonplace in Knoxville, city residents seem to enjoy making their own history as the only major U.S. city with the Boxer in its top slot,” says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “The Boxer’s dominance over the Labrador Retriever is a good example of the city’s slogan ‘Uniquely Knoxville.’”

“It looks like Las Vegas dog owners don’t like to gamble when it comes to their favorite breeds,” says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “They placed the national favorites -- the Lab and the Yorkie -- in the top two spots, and other than swapping the Beagle for the Miniature Schnauzer, the lists are very similar. * The Poodle lost popularity, moving from 2nd in 2006 to 5th this year. Nationally, however, it reigned supreme from 1959 to 1981, and has rarely been out of the Top 10 due to its intelligence, versatility and coat-type that’s suitable for allergy sufferers.

Local Statistical Snapshot
* Raleigh was one of the few cities this year to not include the trendy Bulldog on its Top 10 list; the breed was narrowly squeezed out by the Maltese, coming in at 11th place.
* Except for the Maltese, every single breed on Raleigh’s list also ranks in the national Top 10 list.
* Although small dogs continue to gain popularity across America, in Raleigh the diminutive Yorkie fell from 3rd place in 2006 to 5th in 2007.
* Raleigh residents can see and learn more about their favorite breeds on Saturday, February 2 when the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship — where the world’s top dogs compete for $225,000 in prize money and the title of “National Champion” — airs on Animal Planet from 8-11pm.
* Tarheels will also enjoy watching the show in order to cheer on one of their own – Boston Terrier “Ch Shine’s Cupid Dolly.” Owned by local residents, “Dolly” will compete for $50,000 and the Best in Show title. Boston Terriers are currently ranked 12th in Raleigh and 16th in the nation.
“Raleigh’s favorite dogs are representative of the rest of the nation’s,“ says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “I’m surprised that the dignified Bulldog, which has been climbing the ranks in cities across the nation, still has not managed to crack Raleigh’s top ten. Perhaps the Bulldogs of North Carolina A&T State University need to make their voices heard!"

Local Statistical Snapshot
* Reflecting the current popularity of the Lab, Yorkie, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever, the first four breeds in Sacramento’s Top 10 are identical to the nation’s favorites.
* The petite Pomeranian scampered up Sacramento’s list to tie with the trendy Bulldog and squeeze its way into the last slot on the Top 10 list; last year this active toy dog was the city’s 16th most popular breed.
* Sacramento residents included the Chihuahua and Pug in their Top 10 list in 2006; this year both breeds fell off in rankings to 12th and 13th place.
* Sacramento residents can see and learn more about their favorite breeds on Saturday, February 2 when the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship — where the world’s top dogs compete for $225,000 in prize money and the title of “National Champion” — airs on Animal Planet from 8-11pm.
"Residents of California's capital city offered few surprises in terms of preferred dog breeds," says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "Aside from the Pomeranian, the dogs in Sacramento's top ten are reflected on the national list –they are dependable, adaptable favorites that acclimate well to life in sunny California."

Local Statistical Snapshot

* Not only did the Bulldog follow the national trend in Phoenix, rising from 8th in 2006 to 7th in 2007, but the Rottweiler muscled its way on to the Top 10, pushing the historically popular Poodle off the list.
* The Yorkshire Terrier leapt from 4th in 2006 to 2nd in 2007 in Phoenix, mirroring top 3 breeds nationwide.
* Among the least common breeds in Phoenix are the Black Russian Terrier, Irish Terrier and Field Spaniel.
* Phoenix residents can see and learn more about all of their favorite breeds on Saturday, February 2 when the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship — where the world’s top dogs compete for $225,000 in prize money and the title of “National Champion” — airs on Animal Planet from 8-11pm.

“Small breeds moved up the list in Phoenix, reflecting a nationwide trend,” says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “It can’t be denied that Phoenix loves its portable pooches, however, the recent rise of the Rottweiler and the top-dog status of the Lab show that the city also has an appreciation for large breeds.”
