How to keep Your Pet Safe on Halloween

The Halloween Outing

Leash
- Always have a pet on a leash, why? Because he just does not look good as a hood ornament. Also, you may love the little guy (or gal) too much to see them expire like that, if at all. Bring a leash so that your pet is close to you avoiding not only vehicles but Trick-or-Treaters as well.

Pet safety for Halloween begins with commonsense in leash laws for various reasons, but mainly with the pet's best interest at heart, and sometimes the person in the wrong costume at the wrong street.

If a Trick-or-Treater is dressed like a large bone, Fido's may just dart towards that reward. And this is why the leash is most important. You do not want Fido to chew on a Trick-or-Treater.

Halloween decorations can become a hazard to pets so go by the directions of each product and place in appropriate places to assure a safe environment for both pet and pet owner.

If you are walking a pet make sure that you do not allow them to reach dangerous wires or Halloween decorations. Some of the items may be dangerous, a pet may lick them and get sick or fall ill.

Flashlight - When the moon is not enough to carry it's way through the dark night of Halloween, use a flashlight for you and your pet. This safety measure can be used all year round during nights and evening hours.

Costume Related - Make-up is great for humans, but not pets, one of many Halloween pet safety tips. Do not try to paint your pet into Heath Ledger's Joker, that would just be silly. However, you can purchase an animal dress up kit that contains make-up that is safe for all pets. Check your local pet or Halloween stores.

Halloween safety tip: If a pet's costume is dark make sure that you place something white enough to see in the dark. This way cars and Trick-or-Treaters can see your pet coming.

Halloween pet safety does not always have to be for the traveling creature, it could also make the difference inside of a home during Halloween. These next pet safety Halloween tips consist of Fido indoors and excited.

* Do you know why many dogs urinate indoors during Halloween? The excitement of door bell rings and faces of many Trick-or-Treaters. The environment around them change just for that day as each Halloween dogs take shorter walks so that others can be home to greet Trick-or-Treaters or so that the family could go out to Trick-or-Treat. If you do not want to create a urination problem in your pet, do not offer your pet a large bowl of water in the early Halloween evening.

* Put your pet in a fenced in backyard or another safe location if they are not friendly or accustomed to Halloween and door bells ringing over and over again. Make sure that a beware sign is posted to keep others aware. Spend some time with your pet between Trick-or-Treaters, they will enjoy that even though it may be quite tiring for you.

* Never allow anyone to pet your animal through a partially opened door. It's not a wise thing to do since your pet could become disturbed somehow by a stranger's hand.

Have a safe and fun Halloween season to both pet and pet owner!
